Apple killing the headphone jack port was one of the biggest tech stories of 2016...and it appears Samsung is looking to hop onto the trend, too.
Samsung-centric blog SamMobile reports it can "exclusively confirm" the upcoming Galaxy S8 will also ditch the basic 3. 5mm headphone plug in favour of a sleeker, thinner and more fit design. The report won't name its sources, so it's fair to take the news with a wholesome grain of salt.
To get the musically minded, your blog claims the device will possibly compensate by integrating new stereo audio system made with tech from recently acquired Harman, since removing the only way to enjoy sound on the down low and replacing it with extra-loud speakers is a fully rational trade.
Individually, SamMobile claims it's affirmed the Galaxy S8 will feature an USB Type-C port. Technically the now-discontinued Galaxy Note7 was the first Samsung phone with USB-C, so that it makes sense the S8 would continue the trend.
What does not quite add up is why the headphone plug is on the cutting block. At this moment, it's a major differentiator between Galaxy line and the i phone, and by forcing users to get their sound via the USB interface, Samsung won't get the same boost of S8 users ponying up for its own line of headphone adapters like Apple gets with its light port.
As with any phone manufacturer, Samsung looking for to harvest every cubic millimeter it can within a smartphone underchassis in order to improve its technology. Perhaps really simply weighing new and newer technology against the headphone jack and made the decision the latter has to go. Or maybe it has a newfound love of dongles.
We'll find out if these are just gossip or if the proof was real in March 2017 when the Galaxy S8 debuts at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona. Until then, maintain onto your corded headsets tight -- and consider investing in some cellular earbuds.
